“What To Expect” Information

Show Information

The Worm is a story about a little worm's life which is turned upside down when a giant bird snatches his mother away. The little worm embarks on a dangerous journey through dark tunnels, abandoned streets, and murky underworld bars in the underground world, forcing him to face various dangers and solve riddles to find and save his mother. The worm must face off against a Blind Rat, a Snail, a large poisonous spider and a Gardener. It is a journey from the dark to the light, exploring themes of courage and navigating trust.

The show is performed on a set that looks like a tunnel through the soil underground. There is a musician on stage performing live with recorded background music as the story unfolds. At times there is fog and haze used to illustrate the darkness of underworld. At times there are brighter lights as the characters discuss happy times and remember those they love. There are sound effects which may surprise you, and the characters dance and sing a song.

This show is created for adults aged six and older. 

Performance Information

Lighting:

The Worm has a variety of different lighting states. Stage lights help create the atmosphere of the show. These lights are generally a white or a light yellow colour. There are moments when they are blue and a scene where they are orange/red. They shift in colour and will brighten and dim during the show.

Key lighting moments include:

  • The lights change pattern and position, shine into the set or the backdrop, and change colour.

  • There are moments where the lights go off completely.

  • There are multiple lamps throughout the set, some are hanging from the ceiling and others are hidden behind the set.

  • Neon light is hung from the ceiling which flickers on at times.

  • There is an oversized lightbulb which lights up.

  • The lights move between very low lighting to quite bright.

  • There are no moving lights, or lights that point directly at the audience.

The audience are welcome to use a hat or sunglasses during the show to be comfortable under the lights.

Sound:

The Worm is a show with a live musician and there are times when the music and sound is loud. It features:

  • A live musician and recorded music, and voices from offstage.

  • There is one song in the show that has lyrics, accompanied by the musician on the keyboard as the actors sing.

  • There are a few scenes with props that have noisy sound effects. Sounds and sound effects such as a trumpet tooting while an actor is yelling ‘help!’

  • Sometimes the actors will speak or shout loudly.

  • The audience may get excited and clap, and loudly cheer and laugh.

The audience are welcome to use ear plugs, noise cancelling headphones, or other forms of ear protection to comfortably enjoy the show.

Audience Interaction:

  • The performers move around the space, and up and down some of the aisles and walk across two rows of the seated area. These rows will be clearly marked so you can avoid these seats if you do not want direct interaction with the actors.

  • The audience is encouraged to laugh, clap, and cheer.

  • The audience is welcome to be noisy and reactive in response to the show.

Content Warnings:

This show contains:

  • Smoke and haze

  • Themes of death

  • The characters in the show display strong emotions, and argue and get upset with each other. They will cry, be mean to each other, and have moments of worry and stress.

Special Effects:

  • The production uses fog at various moments during the show. This will billow onto the stage and the audience, and makes the theatre look smokey. The fog does not smell like anything and there is no real fire or smoke in the theatre.

  • Giant puppets/props are used - there is a large spider, very big spade that is lowered down quickly from above the set onto the stage and lands with a thud noise, large birds beck, and three bird puppets.
